Game 2  "FISH FOR WORDS GAME"

This game gives students practice in dividing the alphabet into sections and recognizing letters in the alphabet within a range. The children taught me that it can be played as a cooperative game, too.

FISH FOR WORDS

MATERIALS

  1. Magnetized plastic alphabet letters in a box. Be sure all letters are in the box. Use a set with multiples of letters.
  2. Food words in 4 containers marked A-F, G-L, M-R, S-Z. All food words are face down in the container. (Glue words to heavy paper and laminate.) I use empty square tissue boxes.
  3. Below is a set of food words and a set of animal words.
  4. 1 "fishing pole" with magnet on the end.
  5. My Second Picture Dictionary (1 copy per student).

 

DIRECTIONS

Players: 2-4

  1. Players who goes first is the one whose first name starts with the letter closest to the letter K.
  2. A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z

  3. Player 1 fishes in the alphabet box until s/he lands a letter. Then s/he selects the box from which to choose a word card with a first letter match. Player 1 selects a word card.
  4. If the first letter matches, the player places the letter and the word together in front of him/her as a match. If it does not match, player separates word and letter alphabetically to make a match later.
  5. Players 2, 3, 4 then repeat the play.
  6. The first player to get 5 matches wins the game.
  7. The children can play cooperatively in this game. They can help each other find their five matches and when they each have five the game is over. Provide a small treat (sticker, hard candy) for their good work.
